I enjoy visiting local museums and learning a bit of local history, so during a trip to Swindon this week I took Thing 1 and Thing 2 to The Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.
I had checked in advance what time it opened and we arrived just before. It is an old building but there was a ramp up to the front door and the double pushchair fit in through the pillars and the door. As I walked in I saw a sign directing me to where I could leave the pushchair. The museum and gallery are on several floors with no lift access. This is fine for us as The Things like to roam free these days, but it’s not great if you need a pushchair.
Things 1 and 2 were happy to be set free from their pushchair and immediately started walking around the first gallery and having a look at the artefacts and art on display. We wandered in to the the gallery opposite and I was really pleased to see a table with colouring in. Thing 1 and Thing 2 sat straight down and started to draw. This actually kept them amused long enough for me to have a look around at the art on display. This was a first for me. My usual experience of museums and galleries is not seeing anything as I can’t take my eyes off of my mischievous toddlers. They didn’t sit for more than five minutes but that was more than enough for me to get a feel for the work.
Next we visited the Made in Swindon room. The Things were particularly excited by the old fire engine and they enjoyed looking at all of the toys that were on display. Looking at the toys I started to feel a bit old as I actually owned some of them as a child and here they were in a museum. Things 1 and 2 are going to have a good laugh when they are old enough to realise their Mum is old enough to remember toys that are now in a museum!
We wandered up the stairs in to the Roman and Iron Age exhibition. Plenty to look at and luckily it’s behind glass so Thing 1 and Thing 2 couldn’t do any damage. We found another table of activities in this room and sat down to take a look. In amongst the opportunities to design a Roman brooch and do a word search was some pottery that you could look up and identify. At two years old The Things are too young for this, but did like being about to get hands on. We had a good look and feel of each piece, talked about the colour and patterns. It’s great letting Things 1 and 2 get hands on. They are so much more engaged than when they are just looking at objects. I enjoy it too. There were also some dressing up costumes but sadly I couldn’t persuade my two to stay still long enough to get a costume on them. Maybe next time.
Then it was on to the top floor. The room on the left holds fossils and rocks. Again there was a table and chairs and The Things did a bit of drawing while I had a wander about and actually got to read some of the information. Amazing! I particularly enjoyed learning about the dinosaur fossils found in Swindon. I know we will be back when the Things 1 and 2 are old enough to appreciate this bit of local history.
The final room we visited had an Egyptian mummy in it. Once again, Thing 1 and Thing 2 found the table of drawing and sat themselves down. I was just reading how Swindon had managed to acquire a mummy when Thing 2 decided he was going to fill his nappy. The rooms at the museum are not huge and the smell quickly filled the space. In the time it took for me to persuade Things 1 and 2 that it was time to find a toilet three people had joined us in the small, smelly room. I did apologise for the smell and eventually managed to get them to a toilet.
Like a lot of local museums there are some real gems at the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. We will be back and I might even manage to look at a some of the art exhibitions next time.
I took some time off work and from the blog over the Christmas holidays and like most of the country have sat in front of my computer this week and tried to remember how to make my head work! It’s great giving your brain space to relax but now I need to start thinking about some new arts and cultural activities to try out with Thing 1 and Thing 2. I don’t seem to know where to begin, so I thought I would start with a round-up of everything that I know is out there and hopefully this will help me decide what and where to try next.
I have been to Stourhead a few times so I had a good idea of the estate before we started but the trail was well lit and there were plenty of marshals along the way to point you in the right direct.
The snow stayed on the plate for about one minute and on the table for about five minutes. At one point it felt like there was more on me than on the table. I took a deep breath and let The Things carry on. After the animals we played with tractors and trucks. Particularly fun if you have diggers that can pick up the snow (more mess).
After about 45 minutes the mixture did dry out. You could probably add more shaving foam to keep it going but Things 1 and 2 had got a bit bored by then and were just emptying it all over the floor so I decided it was time to tidy up. Luckily this was really easy to clean up. The vacuum picked up anything on the floor and on my clothes and everything else could be swept up. If you had tidy children who didn’t enjoy tipping it all over the floor you could probably re use it by adding more shaving foam.
Cue Mummy back to her usual library workout trying to get Thing 1 and Thing 2 to stay in the same area and pay attention. For Thing 2 the temptation of books was too much so he sat at the back looking through books and occasionally looking up and taking in the stories. If there was a song he would join in and he occasionally wondered over and sat and listened to bits of the other stories.
Thing 1 on the other hand decided this was an opportunity to explore and dashed off at every opportunity, taking books off shelves, hiding behind corners and generally getting in to mischief. This is a real challenge when you have two toddlers to keep an eye on. I had to try and keep one eye on Thing 2, making sure he was safe and not looking for me, while I ran around after Thing 1. I tried my best to pen Thing 1 in but he was very creative with his escape methods and even managed to get under the book shelves at one point!
We missed the actual switch on of the lights as we were passing ‘The Flight Before Christmas’ just before 5 and decided to give it a go. We didn’t actually know what to expect from the show and The Things were restless as soon as I tried to get them to sit down. Luckily there weren’t any other people sitting near us so Things 1 and 2 could bounce around a bit. We still had them on reins so they couldn’t go far. Then it began. The show started as a story but the birds of prey were soon introduced. It’s magical as they fly noiselessly around the large space and so close that you can feel the breeze as they pass you. This did keep Thing 1 and Thing 2 entertained. They especially liked the big owl which was very impressive.
This was the perfect activity for the four of us. Things 1 and 2 were looking at the lights, taking it all in and enjoying toddling about. Unlike in museums and galleries where I miss a lot because The Things don’t stop, I could see everything and take it all in as I followed after them. We did have one little tantrum from Thing 2 towards the end of the trail of lights (it took us about and hour and half to do them all) but he had done a lot of walking and I knew he would be worn out. Daddy put him on his shoulders and Thing 2 was still kicking off. Luckily we were just walking in to the fairy garden and the music completely captured Things 1 and 2 and Thing 1 even had a little jig. Thing 2s tantrum was forgotten. One parent did ask if I regretted not bringing the pushchair while Thing 2 was throwing himself about but honestly I didn’t. Two toddlers on reins and a pushchair really needs three adults.
A couple of weeks ago Thing 1 and Thing 2 turned 2 and I decided that it was time for a treat. The Things love planes and helicopters so I took them to the Aerospace Museum.
The second hanger has Concorde in it. I was as excited as The Things when I saw this. Plus we got to go on board. The queue was long to get on Concorde and again it was great to have my Dad as he stood in the queue as I entertained Things 1 and 2. The best thing about going on Concorde is that you get to go on as your group so The Things had a chance to explore the plane as did I.
I love dance! I love to dance. I love to watch dance. I love to teach dance. I have been waiting for an opportunity to take Thing 1 and Thing 2 to a dance piece but finding anything suitable for babies or toddlers is quite hard so when I saw
